Some nice words about my Hong Kong exhibition and the state of photography in the city from my dear friend Evelyn.

I am incredibly partial to American photography. Having said that, there is a serious lack of representation of American photographers in Hong Kong’s galleries. I generally feel this genre is underrated due to the fact that photographic prints don’t typically bring in big bucks.

Having lived in the United States myself for almost nine years, photography as a genre is so pervasive in the American collective that it became a part of my everyday life. I am very grateful to have befriended a fee contemporary American photographers. Their friendship reminds me that we are all voyeurs. Choosing to document these microcosms within the larger fabric of society gives the voyeur rare glimpses into the lives of people whom you would not ordinarily encounter.

Steve Diet Goedde is among one of my friends and he recently debuted his works for the first time in Asia at the Landmark mall in Hong Kong. Hanging high above Hong Kong’s foremost luxury fashion stores, Steve’s black and white photographs of glamorized pin-up models remind us of bygone times. Through Steve’s lens, these models live out the nostalgia of Hollywood past, fetishizing the visual appeal of pin-up girls. Yet there is something unconventional and even subversive about these women. They have eschewed traditional images of the rosy, wholesome cheesecake girls who garnered mass-appeal during WWII. Instead, the viewers are beckoned into an alternative representation highly transformed by the influence of LA’s music and film counterculture.

At the same time which Steve’s exhibition was being displayed, formative American photographer/filmmaker Larry Clark also debuted his first show in Asia at the Simon Lee gallery in Hong Kong. Several works from Larry Clark’s seminal Tulsa were on display. Tulsa galvanized the American imagination and has effected the subconscious imagery of an entire generation, but this message seemed to have slipped the radars of many Hong Kongers during the exhibit’s presence. Although these two exhibits did not seem to make a huge splash in their Asian debuts, I can only hope they are the start of a new momentum among Hong Kong galleries.

Here’s the official announcement for my upcoming solo show in Hong Kong. Like a lot of big art shows in Asia, this one is not in a gallery but in a shopping mall. The Landmark is Hong Kong’s ritziest luxury mall/hotel so the work will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people who normally wouldn’t see my work. There won’t be an actual opening - the work will just be on display starting the beginning of April. I was offered an opening, but I just got back from HK a few months ago and it’s just way too soon for me to do that whole international flying thing again. More show info soon…

Kumi, San Francisco 1996 - This was the second shoot I did with Kumi - the first one was the Chinatown shoot with Midori. The shoot was organized by Molly who owned and designed for So Hip It Hurts latex. This is a scaled down version of a new one-gigabyte scan from the the original negative. I would urge all of you artists, models, photographers and other contributors/posters of original content to send similar messages, as this is an issue which affects all of us and which should be remedied.

There is no reason why anyone should be able to reblog the work which we worked so hard to create and then either remove credits or pass the work off as their own.

Of course, people will always be able to steal our work but I think the modification that I have requested would certainly reduce the number of reblogs that delete our credits.
